TIP OF THE WEEK
[The Power of Handling Mistakes]
Everyone makes communication mistakes, especially when emotions run high.
These errors can block real listening and understanding.
Most of us have been on the receiving end of poor communication and know how it feels.
Common mistakes come in two forms.
First, there are personal barriers - like giving unwanted advice or rushing to solve problems.
Second, there are organisational blocks - the systems and culture that get in the way of good communication.
Understanding both gives you a real advantage.
The key is becoming aware of your automatic habits in language, thinking, and behaviour.
As a leader, take responsibility for these patterns instead of blaming others.
Follow the following Communication Sequence to avoid common pitfalls:
- Start with active listening
- Develop empathy
- Build rapport
- Create trust-based influence
- Support behaviour change
- Seek cooperation or collaboration
This isn't a rigid checklist - think of it more as a helpful guide.
Even when you do everything right, some negotiations will still face challenges.
That's okay.
Standing firm on your boundaries is sometimes necessary, both in personal life and professional negotiations.
Just don't let these boundaries blind you to even better possibilities.
When facing conflict, try non-violent communication: observe without judgment, express your feelings, share your needs, and make specific requests.
Most importantly, address resistance head-on.
Don't ignore criticism or negativity - bring it into the open where you can deal with it together.
2 QUOTES THAT STOOD OUT TO ME THIS WEEK
"The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood."
- Ralph Nichols
"To have good communications skills means you are able to make your point without a lot of fillers and stumbling."
- Gregory Davidson
1 QUESTION FOR YOU
Where in your communications are you rushing to problem solve instead of pausing to understand?
